As we mark the anniversary of our planet’s trip around the sun we can thank gravity for once again holding us in that orbit. I have been thinking about gravity, especially now that the ground seems much further away than it used to be. When we were kids we could run and jump and even fall without hardly noticing. When is the last time you “jumped” down off of…well…anything?

And even if we did get hurt back then, at least there was a clear and specific direct cause of that injury! How did you break your arm? I fell off my bike. Simple. How did you hurt your foot? I twisted it after catching the ball. But ask that same question today, How did you hurt your neck? And the answer is “I’m not really sure…I think I slept funny.” OK. So basically, now we get hurt WHILE WE ARE SLEEPING!

It’s not the Tennis or Golf that “hurt” us but, rather, whatever crazy thing that happened while we were asleep that keeps us from playing more of these sports. For a moment I thought that “hitting the sack” might the cause of those sleeping injuries but now I think it is more related to getting up on the wrong side of the bed. Nothing else in life gets credit for happening while we are sleeping. Well, maybe there are a few great decisions that were made after someone decided to “sleep on it,”  but I am not going to lose sleep over that exception.

We do have a number of expressions that relate to sleeping. That would make sense as it is supposedly 1/3 of our life. Some go as far back as the invention of the bed (sleep tight) because the beds were made of rope and they would sag if not tightened. Sleep like a log or sleep like a baby. And we can also engage in shorter versions of sleep when we snooze, nap, take 40 winks or a siesta.

So hopefully you are well rested after the holidays and like us are looking forward to All Charities now just a few weeks away – much earlier than usual. We are fortunate that our Chairs Lori and Brad Young, along with their Silent Auction Chairs, Meg and Pat Shields, have been hard at work all last year to tee up a really spectacular line up of live and silent auction items for this year. If you have never participated, it is time to take a look, and if you have participated in the past, you will not want to miss all the new, fun and exciting experiences, wines and other items in this year’s auction. Plus it’s fun just attending the Silent Auction Preview and wine tasting on Friday night or the Burgers, Beers and Bidding on Saturday Afternoon. Unlike the Gala Saturday Night, these two events have plenty of room for all to enjoy.

The auction catalog will be available for preview on January 24th. When you find something you like, don’t hit the snooze button! Keep bidding until it’s yourzzzzzzz.
